Re‑certification ensures that certified professionals continue to maintain their skills, contribute to their profession, and remain active in their Discipline or Specialty. This article explains what is required to renew your certification and how the process works.
What Is Required for Re‑Certification?
The specific requirements for re‑certification are defined in the Configuration Document for your profession.
For individuals re‑certifying directly with The Open Group, the following two components are required:
1. Earn a Professional Development (PD) Milestone Badge
This badge demonstrates that you have continued to develop your professional knowledge, skills, and industry awareness.
2. Either:
- Complete the Declaration of Continued Practice, or
- Earn an Experience Profile (EP) Milestone Badge
You may choose the option that best reflects your recent professional activity.
What Happens After I Meet the Requirements?
Once you have successfully completed:
- A Professional Development Milestone Badge, and
- Either a Declaration of Continued Practice or an Experience Profile Milestone Badge
…the Certification Authority will extend your certification for an additional 3 years.
There is no separate re‑certification fee.
You only pay the standard submission fees for the two required applications.
Level Requirements
Both the Professional Development and Experience Profile Milestone Badges must be submitted at or above the level of your current certification.
For example:
- A Level 2 certified professional must submit Level 2 (or Level 3) PD and EP evidence.
- A Level 3 certified professional must submit Level 3 PD and EP evidence.
What Is the Declaration of Continued Practice?
The Declaration of Continued Practice is a written submission in which you describe:
- The contributions you have made to your profession over the past 3 years
- How you have continued to practice in your Profession and Discipline/Specialty
- Evidence that you have maintained performance at or above your current certification level
This option is typically sufficient for individuals who wish to re‑certify at the same level and in the same Discipline/Specialty.
