If your Open Professions certification has expired, you may still be able to re‑certify depending on how long it has been since your certification lapsed. This article explains your options and the steps required.
Can I Still Re‑Certify After My Certification Has Expired?
If your certification expired within the past year
Yes.
You may re‑certify by completing:
- A Professional Development (PD) Milestone Badge, and
- A Declaration of Continued Practice
This combination is sufficient as long as your certification expired less than one year ago.
If your certification expired more than one year ago
You are still welcome to return to the Open Professions program. However, you must demonstrate that you have continued to practice at or above your certified level.
In this case, you must complete:
- A Professional Development (PD) Milestone Badge, and
- An Experience Profile (EP) Milestone Badge
The Experience Profile provides evidence that you have maintained your professional capability since your certification lapsed.
Can I Re‑Certify at a Higher Level?
No.
Re‑certification applies only to your current:
- Profession
- Discipline / Specialty (if applicable)
- Level
If you wish to move to a higher level, you must complete the full certification process for that level.
How Long Will It Take to Get Re‑Certified?
You should plan for at least one month of elapsed time after submitting both required applications:
- Professional Development application, and
- Declaration of Continued Practice or Experience Profile
The timeline typically includes:
1. Certification Authority Review (up to 10 business days)
The Certification Authority will:
- Review your applications for completeness and consistency
- Provide feedback if revisions are needed
- Notify you when your application is ready to be assigned to a Board Member
2. Peer Review (2–3 weeks)
A Peer Review Board Member will:
- Evaluate your Declaration of Continued Practice or Experience Profile
- Submit their decision to the Certification Authority
You will receive your result once the review is complete.
