Overview
The Open Certified Architect (Open CA) certification within The Open Group Open Professions program is a global, experience‑based certification for practicing architects. It validates real‑world skills and professional competencies across Solution, Business, Enterprise, and Digital Architecture disciplines. Certification is awarded based on demonstrated experience, written evidence, and peer review—not an exam.

Certification Process
The Open CA certification process consists of four major steps:
1. Choose Your Certification Level
Review the level descriptions and select the level that matches your experience. Most first‑time applicants begin at Level 1 or Level 2.
2. Prepare Your Written Application
Your application must demonstrate conformance to the Open CA requirements through structured evidence. This includes:
- Professional experience summaries
- Detailed descriptions of architectural engagements
- Evidence of competencies
- References who can validate your work
The Open Group provides a full certification guide to help you prepare your submission.
3. Submit Your Application
Applications are submitted through The Open Group’s certification portal. The program breaks the certification journey into smaller, assessable components called Milestone Badges. Each badge represents a specific aspect of the Conformance Requirements for a given profession and level. You can earn these badges individually and at your own pace. Once all required badges are achieved, you can apply for full certification.
4. Participate in a Peer Review Board
If your final application is accepted, you will be invited to a peer review interview. During this session:
- Certified architects evaluate your experience
- You present your work and answer questions
- The board determines whether you meet the certification requirements
This peer‑based validation is a core strength of the Open CA program.
Re‑Certification
Open CA certifications require periodic renewal to ensure continued professional development. The Open Group provides a recertification process and portal for maintaining your credential.
