How Pearson Handles Candidates With Only One Legal Name

Some candidates legally have a single name (no first/last name distinction). Because Pearson’s registration and ID‑matching systems normally require both a first name and a last name, special handling is needed to ensure the name on the candidate’s ID matches the name on their Pearson exam registration.

This article explains how Pearson  accommodates single‑name (mononymous) candidates and what you must do before taking an exam.

How Pearson Validates Single‑Name Candidates

Pearson requires that the name on your ID must exactly match the name on your exam registration. Their system normally requires both a first and last name. However, when a candidate legally has only one name, Pearson allows the use of a period (.) in the missing name field.
This ensures:

  • Your legal single name is recorded correctly
  • Pearson’s system can validate the name fields
  • The name on your registration exactly matches the name on your government ID

How to Enter Your Name If You Have Only One Legal Name

If your government ID contains only one name:

  1. When creating an account with The Open Group, enter your single legal name in the First / Given Name field (or Last Name field (whichever reflects how your ID is structured).)
  2. Enter a period (.) in the other field, typically the Last Name field.

Example

If your ID shows only:
RAJESH

Your Pearson account may be entered as:

  • First name: RAJESH
  • Last name: .

or the reverse, as long as it matches the ID exactly.

ID and Exam Sponsor Requirements Still Apply

Pearson requires that:

  • The name on your government ID
  • The name on your Pearson account
  • The name on record with The Open Group

all match exactly.

When to Contact Support

  • Your ID has only one name and you’re unsure how to enter it
  • Your registration name does not match your ID
