Overview —
Some candidates have names that include accented characters (such as ü, ö, é, ñ). When your name is transferred to Pearson, these accented characters may be automatically converted into plain letters (for example, ü → u).
This article explains how Pearson handles those situations for both OnVUE online‑proctored exams and in‑person test center exams.
Are Missing Accents a Problem for Pearson?
No. Pearson does allow differences involving accents, umlauts, and other special characters when comparing your name on your ID to your name in the Pearson VUE system.
According to Pearson's official Name‑Matching Guidelines, special characters do not need to appear the same on both the ID and the registration:
“A hyphen or other special character (for example Ø, Ö, Ñ) is used in one place but not in the other.”
These are considered matching names.
Pearson gives these as acceptable matches:
- José Garcia = Jose Garcia
-
Erik Mußig = Erik Mussig
This means that:
Müller = Muller
Brönte = Bronte
García = Garcia
These will all pass the name‑matching check.
Does This Apply to Both Test Centers and OnVUE?
Yes.
The same name‑matching rules apply to both testing modes because:
- Pearson uses a single identity‑verification policy for name matching.
- Test center administrators follow the Pearson Name‑Matching Guidelines.
- OnVUE agents also verify the candidate’s name against the registration details using the same matching criteria.
Nothing in the OnVUE ID rules overrides or invalidates the “special characters do not need to match” rule.
Therefore:
You may test at a test center even if your accented last name appears unaccented in Pearson.
You may test through OnVUE even if the system removes the accent.
What Pearson VUE Checks
Pearson requires the name on your ID to match the name in your registration, but the match allows for:
- Missing accents
- Missing umlauts
- Missing diacritics
- Missing special characters
Only major differences (three or more changed letters, or a completely different name) are considered mismatches.
When to Contact Support
You should contact the helpdesk before test day only if:
- The converted name is significantly different beyond the accent removal
- Your ID contains additional names not shown in your Pearson profile
- The system cut off part of your name completely
Otherwise, no action is needed.
Summary
If your last name contains an accent such as ü, and it appears as plain u in Pearson:
This is acceptable
It will not cause an ID mismatch
You can take your exam at a test center or via OnVUE without problems
Pearson explicitly treats accented and unaccented forms of a name as a valid match.
