Overview
The Open Group follows Pearson VUE’s strict exam security policies. In most cases, dictionaries are not permitted during exams. However, candidates with approved accommodations may be allowed to use a translation dictionary under specific conditions.
When a Dictionary Is Allowed
You may use a translation dictionary only if you have been granted one of the following accommodations:
- ESL (English as a Second Language) time extension, or
- Approved medical accommodation
If you qualify, the translation dictionary must meet all of the following requirements:
Translation Dictionary Requirements
The dictionary must:
- Provide word‑to‑word or short‑phrase translations only
- Not include English definitions of foreign‑language words
- Not contain handwritten notes, annotations, or markings
- Not have additional pages inserted or attached
Test center staff will inspect the dictionary before you are allowed to use it.
What Is Not Allowed
- Standard dictionaries (English‑only or bilingual with definitions) are never permitted for The Open Group exams.
- Translation dictionaries are not allowed for OnVUE online‑proctored exams under any circumstances.
Important Note for OnVUE Online Exams
OnVUE exams operate under a strict clean‑room environment. This means:
- No books, papers, or reference materials are allowed
- Dictionaries of any kind are prohibited
If you require a translation dictionary, you must schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE test center.
